Radio Controllers
Clearly a big part of controlling an R/C vehicle is the controller itself. Currently I have 2 controllers. One of them is fancy, the other is not so fancy.
Futaba T6YG, a.k.a. Skysport 6
This radio is a pretty simplistic 6-channel radio. It doesn't have
mixing or memory or anything like that, and only has rough trim control by the knobs. But it does have a few features that are indispensible:
- Dual Rates - allowing you to flip between normal easy-to-fly control surface throw, and huge stunt-flying throw.
- Servo Reversing - flip which direction your servos go
- Trainer Mode - this can be hooked up as a trainer or trainee, so we can "buddy box∞"
But that's about it. Yes, it can control Flaps (knob) and landing gear as well, but without any
mixing capabilities, who wants to fly a machine that expensive and complex with such a basic radio? Not to mention the fact that it is FM band, which is increasingly getting to be a crowded RF spectrum. So it's good for my park flyers and such, but as I want to progress up, and have a safer flight, I need a more robust radio.
Spektrum DX7:
As of this writing, I haven't even turned on this radio - it's still charging! But this puppy is the
cats ass as far as radio's go. This radio can fly anything that flies... from ultralight park-fliers, to full scale helicopters. It has a unique
2.4Ghz spread-spectrum radio link that is amazing, and well beyond my head. But it's point is that it utilizes multiple frequencies, and alternates between them so no single frequency interference can interfere with the transceiver. Very cool stuff.
- It also "binds" to each receiver that it is compatible with in a unique way, so that no crosstalk or other radios can possibly interfere with yours. No more worrying about who is on what channel! All you do is "train" (bind) your radio to your receiver, and you have a mated pair.
- Even better, it has a 20 model memory, so if you have 20 models, each with a different receiver, you just pick which one you are flying in the radio settings, and all of the trim, mix, rates & everything are recalled individually. Now that is sweet.
I'm sure there are more whistles and bells, but you get the gist. Now I just have to learn how to program it... DOH.
Interestingly, I got the Helicopter Version - the only difference being that the heli version has a more fluid throttle movement, and isn't limited by the "ratchet-like" system present on the Airplane version. I'm not sure why anyone likes it set up that way in the first place...
