First Foam Wing Scratch Build

I hope I can pull this off!

I have begun building my first foam wing from scratch. I have seen enough on the forums at rcgroups.com, and I think I'm ready to try one myself. Here I will detail the build process of this plane, and hopefully a great deal of fun flight and modifications as well, presuming I can even get it going to begin with!

Here are a couple of pics of it - almost finished!

Here it is with the winglets installed! Nice! Ready to fly!

Some quick stats: I have some numbers in now... My AUW is 18.2 Oz., and if I run the numbers on the wing loading, that comes in at 9.05 Oz./Sqft, if you include the whole wing area... or conservatively, 12.07 Oz./Sqft (using 75% of the wing surface). I can't tell if this is good or bad, but I have seen heavier wing loadings thats's for sure. So hopefully the funky shape of this thing won't prohibit it flying! We'll see... glide test coming up once I get the winglets on!

The Build

The Build - Lots of Pictures!

Wow! Other than cosmetics, all I have left to do is make and attach the winglets and we're ready to fly! Should be cool. I "Tested" the motor last night, and jesus this puppy has some serious mojo. Spins so incredibly fast. I almost killed myself with it, though... I accidentally reversed my "throttle servo" setting in my radio, and it instantly went to full throttle while in the bench. It was reverse-wired, so It went backwards instead of forwards, and came flying at me... hitting my radio, and nuking it's own propeller. The radio... um... was in my hads at the time, and it came within an inch of the blade slicing into my chest and stomach. That would have sucked. 23,000 RPM or something and a sharp blade. Color me ginsu.

Oh yeah... I need some skids for the bottom as well... plus one that you can toss it with, too. (just watch that propeller!)
