I figured I'd make the first post on my new fancy site about the first tomato of the year! (How lame and domesticated am I?)
BEHOLD! The first tomato!'
This beautiful and symmetric tomato was pulled from the chaotic plant pictured to the right. Our plant isn't exactly well groomed. Honestly, we had no idea how these grow, and this baby grew like gangbusters. So we have tried to stake and cage it as best as we could, but it's just sprawling tomatos everywhere.
There are tons of little green tomatos poppin all over this baby, and we spied the first ripe kid through the tangle:
I learned that I popped it a bit early. It was red for a coupla days, but is still a bit hard for being in the kitchen. I guess you need to let them sit on the plant until they soften up quite a bit. There is a bit of an art form to popping 'maters that I have yet to learn. But it should ripen up on the counter ok, just may not be *quite* as tasty.
